HSBC GOLF ASSOCIATION – 86th ANNUAL MEETING
The HSBC Golf Association’s 86th annual meeting was held at Burnham and Berrow (“B&B”) and Weston Super Mare (“WSM”) Golf Clubs between 12th and 16th May 2014. This was our fourth visit to WSM, our first one being in 1925. We first visited B&B in 1957 and used both Golf Clubs that year. We last visited both Golf Clubs in 1964, 50 years previously. The two golf clubs looked after us extremely well with each course proving to be testing, particularly during the first 2 days of medal play in windy conditions.
Golf Week was attended by 115 golfers, including 6 new members attending their first meeting.
One new ingredient of this year’s Golf Week, as part of the Golf Association’s “Involvement in the Community” initiative, was our sponsorship of WSM Golf Club’s junior team via the provision of HSBC branded golf shirts, caps and balls for all their matches against other golf clubs in 2014. Additionally, we also provided HSBC branded prizes for the Somerset Junior Golf Open which was held at WSM on 20 July 2014 which involved junior teams representing many golf clubs from the “west country” region in a team qualifier for a national competition. We are grateful to our Committee member, Phil Sargeant who kindly arranged and presented the prizes at this event, photographs of which can be found on our website (www.hsbcga.org).
Main Trophy Winners:
Bank Champion
The 2014 Bank Championship was won by Paul Matthews from Bristol with a gross score of 154. Niall Johnson, a scratch golfer who was our Bank Champion the previous 2 years, was runner-up with a gross score of 157, proving how testing the conditions were.
The Forbes Trophy (for the best net score for 36 holes on Monday and Tuesday) was an extremely close contest won by Dennis Woodgate with a net score of 148. He beat Tom Butler, James Hannah and Mark Thomson (Secretary) who all had the same score, by virtue of Dennis’ lower scoring round at B&B.
The John Cox Salver (for the best veterans net score for 36 holes on Monday and Tuesday) was also won by Dennis Woodgate with a net score of 148 with runner-up John Topolinski one shot adrift.
The President’s Trophy (a stableford competition over 36 holes on Monday and Tuesday played from the forward tees) was won by Andy Page with 57 points who narrowly beat runner-up David Young who had the same score by virtue of Andy’s better round at B&B.
The Venture Cup (a knock-out competition played from the white tees on the B&B course from Wednesday to Friday) was won by Nick James who defeated Niall Johnson in the final on Friday afternoon. The losing semi-finalists were Chris Burge (Vice Captain) and James Hannah.
The Veterans Trophy (a knock-out competition from the white tees on the B&B course from Wednesday to Friday) was won by Lionel Dorn who beat John Topolinski in the final.
